Tusheti is such a place in the Republic of Georgia that could be a heaven or a hell at the same time. On one hand it is a stunning area with gorgeous mountains, where the air is fresh and crisp even when it gets above 40C (104F) down in the valley. On the other hand it is extremely challenging to live so high up there the whole year around. One should truly possess a character and resilience of a mountain rock! Even in summer life there is far from an easy one with the lack of mobile and phone connection, shops, all kind of social event, and city life. Summer is so short there that people plant potatoes right after the snow is gone and harvest it right before the first snow is due. Even getting to Tusheti is an adventure in itself especially for those who is afraid of heights.
It is a sunny, clear and a warm Saturday morning and we are heading towards Kakheti, the winemaking region of Georgia. We are going to visit some places and see some people that will make our time in Georgia even more remarkable. Our day is full: paying visits to a couple of old wine cellars, meeting wine makers, seeing mountains and vineyards, and enjoying the picturesque markets with baskets full of peaches, and piles of watermelons and melons that smell like honey.
On the pavement and along the roads there are lots of watermelons, crimson red and juicy, bright yellow melons that smell like heaven itself, there are tall baskets full of peaches and nectarines, and here and you can spot the first apples and pears.
This year summer rolled round to Georgia in the middle of May! The street vendors sell local strawberries, new potatoes, and generous bunches of fragrant greens and herbs. The stalls of flower sellers are drowning under the heaps of blooming lilacs, red poppies, and tender daisies.
