Petra Fortress. Once on fortress site there were settlements. Archaeologists have identified cultural layers. The earliest dated back to late Bronze Age - Early Iron (II - I millennium BC). Petra fortress (Greek "rock") was founded by Emperor Justinian I.
During "Lazi Wars" (541-562 A.D.), fortress was captured by Persians under the command of Khosrov I. In 549 Byzantine army under command of Dagisfey made attempt to repulse the fortress. But this military company failed. Only after end of next phase of war with Persia, Byzantines managed to regain control of Petra, which was subsequently destroyed by them. Perhaps it was no need in fortress.
